FEARLESS VOICES: A PROVOCATIVE ZINE EXPLORATION OF WOMEN’S SAFETY
‘GIRL CLUB’
As part of a creative agency, I collaborated with a team to produce an innovative and thought-provoking zine in partnership with TSPTR, a brand known for its passion for great design and compelling narratives. Our objective was to create a publication that connected with and celebrated TSPTR's Spring/Summer 2022 Journal through the theme of "Revolution."
Drawing inspiration from TSPTR's co-founder Russ Gater's interest in exploring stories that resonate with people's lives, we delved into the topic of female revolution and changemakers. Through extensive research, we uncovered the alarming issue of club spiking and its impact on women's safety, which became the focal point of our zine.
Leveraging my strong communication skills, I facilitated effective collaboration within our team, ensuring a seamless exchange of ideas and perspectives. This open dialogue allowed us to explore the sensitive topic with a unique approach – a light, comedic tone that aimed to empower and uplift our target audience.
My creative abilities shone through the development of an engaging concept: a compilation of pages that reflected the fear and concerns of young women amid the spiking epidemic. By juxtaposing the theme of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" with this stark reality, we crafted a thought-provoking narrative that challenged societal norms and sparked conversations around women's safety and empowerment.
Throughout the project, my digital literacy and publication design skills were instrumental in bringing our vision to life. I expertly curated and arranged a diverse range of original visual and written content, ensuring a cohesive and impactful presentation that celebrated TSPTR's brand values, ethos, and broader perspectives.
Moreover, my innovative approach to zine-making allowed us to push boundaries and explore unconventional storytelling techniques. By embracing the tangible and tactile nature of zines, we counteracted the rise of social media and facilitated face-to-face interactions, fostering a deeper connection with our audience.
This project not only showcased my ability to collaborate effectively within a team but also highlighted my versatility in combining research, conceptual thinking, and technical skills to create a meaningful and thought-provoking publication. Through our zine, we celebrated TSPTR's brand while addressing a pressing societal issue, demonstrating our commitment to driving positive change through creative expression.
